cRIO System Integration

Example System: NETbase

For measurements on large systems around the world, PI Electronics AG develops compact and expandable measuring systems. The highest demands are placed on these systems with regard to the places of use and the various measurement orders. Measurements can, for example, take place on the high seas or at remote locations. Strong temperature fluctuations have to be covered and the measurement time can range from a few weeks to several years. Power failures must mean no or only a minimal measurement interruption.

The device produced by PI Electronics AG can also be used directly for acceptance tests on site and thus saves expensive in-house infrastructure. In addition, remote access via the Internet allows seamless (24/7) monitoring of the measurements.

Single board RIO System Integration

Example System: WinTrigBox

As is usual with rotating machines, the crank angle is the reference for the measurement data on ship engines. If possible, an angle encoder is used to record it. However, it is often not possible to mount the encoder or it is very time-consuming.
By using the WinTrigBox, the use of an encoder can be dispensed with and conventional inductive sensors can be aligned with the teeth of the machine gear wheel and connected to the WinTrigBox. The internal algorithm calculates the speed from the signals obtained from this and generates an angle signal corresponding to an encoder.

The heart of the WinTrigBox is a single board RIO. The very fast and complex algorithm is implemented on the FPGA. The electronics developed by PI Electronics are also controlled by the FPGA. A web server runs on the processor, which makes it easy to operate remotely. All settings can be made conveniently with a mobile phone or notebook via WLAN.
Thanks to the robust design and the fact that there are no operating elements on the device, the WinTrigBox withstands the harsh environmental conditions of field measurements on ship diesel engines.

Separation of device and control unit

The WinTrigBox in operation. The mobile phone is connected to the web service running on the WinTrigBox via WLAN. The user interface for control via the web interface can be seen on the display.
The strict separation of user interface and process leads to a very high level of process reliability. Once configured, the device continues to function seamlessly in the event of a keypad failure or loss of connection.

Versatile housing solution and modular concept

The inner life of the WinTrigBox has a modular structure. The thermal kit ensures a direct, thermal connection between the ICs of the sbRIO and the housing used as a heat sink. The motherboard developed by PI Electronics generates the required electrical voltages and carries customer-specific printed circuit boards as well as a universally usable WLAN module.

cDAQ System Integration

Example System: PI-cDAQ

Various challenges arise for measurements in test cells. The systems should be expandable with minimal effort and quickly adapted to daily measurement tasks. Another important factor is the price/performance ratio per channel, which comes into play when there are a large number of channels. Good accessibility of the measuring connections and variable module adaptation make everyday measuring easier and reduce conversion costs.
